Custom Glass Neon Signs — Hand-Bent in Our Studio

A custom glass neon sign is a made-to-order illuminated sign crafted from real glass tubing, shaped by hand and filled with neon or argon gas. Each piece is produced individually by a trained artisan in the Echo Neon studio. Use the form at the top of the page to request a custom quote, or upload your logo or artwork for a free mock-up. Before you place an order, this guide explains what makes traditional glass neon authentic, how your sign is produced, which elements you can customise, when glass is a better choice than LED and the practical trade-offs involved.

What You Can Customize

Choose the wording, font, colour, size, acrylic backboard and mounting method.

Text or logo

Enter your wording into the custom neon sign generator, or upload a logo, illustration or other graphic design. Our team will review the artwork and send a free mock-up within 24 hours. Glass is best suited to clean designs with continuous lines. Detailed logos may need to be simplified or divided into several tube sections. Any necessary adjustments will be discussed before you approve the final design.

Font

Choose from our available font styles. Flowing scripts and connected lettering work especially well with glass because their shapes follow the natural movement of the tubing. Block fonts can also be produced, although they may require more separate sections and welded joins.

Colour

Glass neon colours are created through a combination of gas, phosphor coatings and coloured glass. The available range is smaller than the colour range offered with LED neon, but the glow is warmer, deeper and difficult to reproduce with LEDs.

Size

Select dimensions that suit the wall, bar, shopfront or venue where the sign will be displayed. Glass tubing has practical size limits, particularly when mounted on a single backboard. Larger signs may be divided across several panels or glass sections that are installed side by side. The customiser or our design team will confirm what can be safely produced and transported.

Installation Style

A. Direct-to-wall. The glass tubing arrives in several sections that are mounted directly onto the wall without an acrylic backboard. This creates the cleanest and most traditional vintage neon appearance.

B. Pre-mounted. The sign arrives attached to a clear acrylic backboard with pre-drilled mounting holes. It is easier to install and can usually be hung soon after delivery.

Dimmer

A dimmer is included so you can adjust the brightness for the room. Glass neon provides a steady, continuous glow and does not offer the flashing, colour-changing or animated effects available with some LED neon signs.

How We Make Your Glass Neon Sign

Production runs in four steps from approval to your door:

Design

Your design is reproduced at full size on a heat-resistant pattern that the artisan uses as a guide. For text-based signs, the form above helps create the initial layout. For logos and original artwork, upload your file and our design team will prepare a proof for approval within 24 hours.

Heat and Bend

Sections of glass tubing are heated over a ribbon burner at approximately 650°C until the material becomes pliable. The artisan shapes each heated section against the full-size pattern while gently blowing air through the tube to prevent its diameter from collapsing. Once a section has cooled, it cannot simply be reshaped like flexible LED tubing. Each bend must be carefully judged and completed by hand.

Weld and Add Electrodes

When a design requires several sections, the ends of the glass tubes are heated and fused together. Electrodes are then attached to the completed tube. These electrodes conduct the electrical current that activates the gas inside the sign.

Bombard

The sealed tube is connected to a vacuum system and exposed to a high-current charge in a process known as bombarding. This removes moisture, gases and other impurities from inside the glass. Careful bombarding helps produce the bright, even and long-lasting glow associated with a professionally made glass neon sign.

Fill and Seal

The tube is filled with the gas needed to create the selected colour. Neon produces red and orange tones, while argon is used for blue and, together with phosphor-coated or coloured glass, a broader selection of colours. Some traditional glass neon colours may use a small sealed quantity of mercury within the tube. The completed tube is then permanently sealed.

Test, Mount and Pack

Your finished sign is connected to its transformer and tested for colour, brightness and electrical stability. It is then mounted to your selected backboard or prepared as a direct-to-wall installation. Every sign is wrapped in protective packaging and placed in a sturdy custom case for shipping.

Standard production takes approximately 6 to 8 business days. Free standard worldwide shipping usually takes a further 4 to 6 business days.

What Makes a Glass Neon Sign Authentic?

A vintage glass neon sign is defined by its materials and craftsmanship, not simply by a retro-looking design. Three qualities distinguish real glass neon from an LED sign made to imitate its appearance.

The first is the tubing. Real glass tubes, typically 8 to 10 mm in diameter, are heated over an open flame and shaped by hand using a full-size pattern. Because every bend is formed individually, no two handmade glass neon signs are exactly alike.

The second is the gas inside the tube. Neon gas creates the familiar red and orange glow. Argon, often used with a phosphor coating inside the glass, produces blues and a wider range of colours. When an electrical current passes through the tube, the gas becomes ionised and emits light in every direction.

This creates the distinctive 360-degree glow that gives traditional glass neon its depth and sculptural quality. LED neon, by comparison, primarily emits light from the front surface of its silicone tubing.

The third is the craft itself. Glass tube bending is a specialist trade that requires years of training. Each sign continues a commercial art tradition that has illuminated restaurants, theatres, hotels, bars and shopfronts since the early twentieth century. That level of specialist labour is also one reason real glass neon costs more to produce.

When to Choose Glass Over LED

Echo Neon produces both traditional glass neon signs and custom LED neon signs. Neither material is automatically better in every setting.

Glass offers greater authenticity, a deeper glow and a stronger sense of craftsmanship. LED is generally more affordable, lighter, more energy-efficient, safer for family spaces and more flexible for detailed designs.

Sound May produce a faint ambient hum Silent
Heat Glass tubes become warm during operation Generally cool to the touch
Indoor/Outdoor Indoor use only at Echo Neon Indoor use; sheltered outdoor use with splash-proof treatment
Color Range Fewer colours with a rich, saturated glow 18 colours, including switchable and dynamic RGB options
Best For Home bars, restaurants, retro interiors, heritage shopfronts and art installations Bedrooms, children’s rooms, weddings, events, businesses and gifts

Choose glass when authenticity and visual presence are more important than price, weight or design flexibility. It is particularly suitable for adult spaces, heritage interiors and long-term feature installations. Choose custom LED neon signs for children’s rooms, outdoor or damp environments, lightweight event displays, highly detailed artwork and projects where cost or safety is the main consideration.

What Glass Neon Signs Are Used For

Traditional glass neon works particularly well in adult-oriented spaces with vintage, industrial or heritage-inspired interiors.

Home Bars and Games Rooms

Glass neon is a classic feature for home bars and entertainment rooms. A surname, signature drink, “Cocktails” sign or personal phrase can create a permanent focal point behind a bar or games area. The warm glow and faint transformer hum contribute to the traditional neon atmosphere.

Restaurants, Cafés and Cocktail Bars

Glass neon suits hospitality venues with a vintage, industrial or late-night concept, including cocktail bars, jazz venues, retro diners, hotel lounges and speakeasy-inspired interiors. Its 360-degree glow creates depth in low-light environments and gives the installation a more authentic appearance than front-lit LED tubing.

Tattoo Studios, Barbershops and Heritage Businesses

A handmade neon sign is well suited to businesses where traditional craft is part of the customer experience. Tattoo studios, barbershops and independent retailers can use glass neon for logos, names and window displays.

Artworks and Gallery Installations

Glass neon can be commissioned as a piece of wall art rather than simply a business sign. Artists, collectors and property owners use custom glass neon for gallery features, private collections and statement installations.

Premium Weddings and Events

For a vintage venue or carefully styled event, a glass neon sign can provide a more substantial and authentic visual feature than LED. Because glass is fragile and requires more careful handling, it is less convenient for frequent event transport. Many customers choose a design they can display at home after the event.

Shopfront and Brand Signage

Independent retailers, restaurants and hospitality businesses can use real glass neon to reinforce a heritage or premium brand identity.Covered, weather-protected commercial installations may be possible for specially designed projects. For any location exposed to rain, humidity or outdoor conditions, LED neon with splash-proof treatment is the more suitable choice.

What to Expect: The Practical Trade-Offs

A real glass neon sign is fundamentally different from an LED sign. Before ordering, consider the following points.

  • It is fragile. Glass tubing can break if the sign is dropped, struck or handled roughly. We package each sign carefully and can arrange a replacement if it arrives damaged in transit, but it must be treated as a glass product after installation.
  • It operates at high voltage. A transformer converts standard household electricity to the higher voltage required to illuminate the gas. The transformer is enclosed and the sign can be connected like a normal electrical appliance, but glass neon is not recommended for nurseries, children’s rooms or any location where the tubes can be easily touched.
  • It is designed for indoor use. Echo Neon glass neon signs are intended for dry indoor spaces. For outdoor, damp or humid areas, choose an LED neon sign with splash-proof treatment.
  • It takes longer to make. Production normally requires 6 to 8 business days because every glass section is formed by hand.
  • It costs more than LED neon. The price reflects the glass tubing, gas, electrodes, transformer and the specialist labour involved in producing each sign.

When these characteristics suit your space and priorities, glass neon delivers an authentic result that LED cannot fully duplicate. When they do not, LED neon provides a similar visual effect with lower cost, lighter weight and fewer installation restrictions.

Installation and Care

Every Echo Neon glass neon sign arrives pre-wired with a transformer and a power lead suitable for connection to a standard Australian power point. An electrician is not normally required. Installation usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the selected mounting style.

Yes, when properly installed and handled. The enclosed transformer converts household electricity to the high voltage required to illuminate the gas, and the sign connects to a power point like another electrical appliance.
However, we do not recommend glass neon for nurseries, children’s rooms or locations where young children can reach the tubing. LED neon is the safer choice for these spaces.

A faint ambient hum can be normal. The high-voltage transformer may produce a slight sound that is noticeable when standing close to the sign in a quiet room.
Many owners consider this part of the character of traditional neon. Choose LED neon when silent operation is important.

A professionally made glass neon sign can last approximately 8 to 15 years with normal use and proper care. In some cases, the glass tubes can continue operating for considerably longer.
The transformer may need to be replaced after around 5 to 10 years, depending on how frequently the sign is used.

Echo Neon glass neon signs are rated for indoor use only. For covered but humid areas, exposed outdoor spaces or locations where moisture is present, choose an LED neon sign with splash-proof treatment.

Each glass tube is shaped by hand over an open flame by an artisan with specialist training. Glass neon also requires electrodes, gas, a transformer and several technical processes that are not required for flexible LED tubing.
The higher price reflects the materials, production time and skilled labour involved.
